09-Jul-2007 - New prostate treatment HIFU

HealthFirst-New prostate treatment By Leslie LoBue

UNDATED (WJRT) - (07/09/07)-- The same technology that gives expectant moms a first peek at their unborn babies may actually kill cancer.

HealthFirst reporter Leslie LoBue explains In much higher doses, Ultrasound waves are blasting away Prostate Cancer cells.

After lung cancer, Prostate Cancer is the number one cancer killer among men, so having a less invasive tool to fight it is big news, indeed.

You can tell whether Blaise Kielar is having a good day by the type of music he plays.

The owner of the world's only electric violin shop escaped in his music when he found out he had prostate cancer.

"If you've got it in your mind that you're having a good time, being expressive, you know, I think everything works better."

Doctors treated his cancer with HIFU -- HIFU high-intensity sound waves.

"HIFU is new and different, and it's very focused," explained Doctor Cary Robertson.

HIFU is like an Ultrasound machine used on pregnant women, only this machine creates sound waves much more powerful and more focused. A probe sends Ultrasound waves through the rectal wall

"And this delivers heat directly into the gland," said Robertson.

It's so hot, so intense, it actually kills cancer cells. "It is possible to exactly target where one wants to give heat," Robertson explained.

The sound waves HIFU uses was something Blaise could relate to. "I took the frequency from the company, and basically kept dividing by two. And I brought it down to the audible frequency range, and I determined it was an F-sharp."

Although HIFU is a non-invasive treatment for prostate cancer, it can cause sexual dysfunction, and some men may experience incontinence. But for Blaise, HIFU was painless and a success!.

HIFU is commonly used in Europe, but still in clinical trials here in the US- and recent studies find 80 percent of men treated with it are still cancer free after seven years.
