New cancer drug could be made available on NHS
By: HAYLEY REVELL
CANCER sufferers in the borough have received the news that a potentially life prolonging drug could be available on the NHS.
Primary care organisations across the north east have agreed to broaden the use of Sunitinib to make it available for those patients with Kidney Cancer who have already received initial treatment for their illness through the drug Interferon.
Discussions have been ongoing with local renal cancer clinicians, who have provided information about patients who have been treated with Interferon for their Kidney Cancer because the NHS had not approved the Sunitinib drug at the time.
The decision about whether the group of patients should receive the treatment is set to be made by their consultant on clinical grounds depending on each individual patient.
